The first thing you see when you come into the hallway is the bathroom, oh the bathroom. Our baseboards throughout will match the baseboards in the hallway, as will the framing around doorways. We will be taking design inspiration from the hallway to try and restore the house to the way it once was. My grandma’s house in Bakersfield, CA and our house in Boise, ID are the SAME plan, The Olivia: It’s a Sears Craftsman house, you ordered a house plan from the Sears Catalog and the plans and all the supplies you needed to build it would arrive at your plot of land.

Then we walked into the hallway and we knew-this was the same house my grandma had when we were kids. When we looked at the house for the first time, my sister was with me and we both thought that the house was familiar. The house was built in 1912 and went through a renovation in the 70’s. My favorite part of the house is the hallway-sounds crazy, right? It’s the only part of the house that is original. We have so much other painting and other renovations to do that the kitchen may stay as is for quite awhile. I would love to take down the wall paper and paint the walls but that’s a nice to have at this point. It is extremely functional and will be easy to fix up when we get there. It’s not the prettiest kitchen I’ve ever seen but it’s not the ugliest.

Most kitchens in the North End are small and closed in. Next up, is the major selling point of the house-a big open kitchen. White washing the brick on the fire place Painting the fire place surround white (we’ll be updating and removing the wood at a later date) The other things that we hope to accomplish in this room before moving in are:

We will be refinishing the floors before we move in. With great hardwood floors hiding under that carpet. Through those French Doors is the living room and dining room. We’ve even discussed expanding the porch to go across the whole front of the house, with the front bedroom window opening onto the porch. The porch slopes quite a bit, so eventually, we’d like to fix that issue and open up the porch a bit more with bigger windows. Judging by the fabulous indoor/outdoor carpet, we’re guessing the 70’s. Those updates won’t come for quite some time! We’ve got much more work to do on the inside before we tackle the outside.įirst, is the porch, that used to be open but was walled in at some point. It needs a paint job, new windows, and a new door. The house has fantastic bones but it is ugly and needs some fixing up! We’ve started this blog to document all the work we’re doing to make this our forever home. I think we’ve pinched ourselves a few times in the last few days. We became quite attached, so the fact that it is ours, doesn’t seem real to us now. We’ve driven by the blue house probably 50 times over the last year fantasizing what we would do with it and watching how it looked in the different seasons. He started getting offers on it, and so we put ours in and he accepted it. We talked to the seller and he actually kept the house (vacant!) for us until we were ready to buy. We first saw the house in January 2013 and knew that we wanted it but also knew that we wouldn’t be ready to buy for another year. It’s very close to downtown, the greenbelt, and it’s surrounded by parks. It’s a 5 minute bike ride from Shaun’s work and hundreds of miles of mountain bike trails and a 10 minute drive from my work. It’s on a fantastic street in our favorite neighborhood (the North End) in Boise, with the best schools. His friend wanted to sell it through a private sale and we wanted to buy it. We found this beauty through our brother-in-law. Here’s a shameless selfie which illustrates just how happy we are to own, as Lucy has named it, The Blue House! Yes, we perched the camera on top of the Element. Here’s the self-timer picture we took that afternoon. When we moved to Boise 3 and a half years ago, our goal was to buy a fixer upper in the North End.
